How did the states respond to the weakness of the Articles of Confederation?

The first governing system of the United States, the Articles of Confederation, placed most government power in the hands of the states. The weaknesses of this system led states to call for a new Constitution.

How did the states interact under the Articles of Confederation?

Although the states remained sovereign and independent, no state was to impose restrictions on the trade or the movement of citizens of another state not imposed on its own. The Articles also required each state to extend “full faith and credit” to the judicial proceedings of the others.

Why did the states reject the Articles of Confederation?

The document was practically impossible to amend. The Articles required unanimous consent to any amendment, so all 13 states would need to agree on a change. Given the rivalries between the states, that rule made the Articles impossible to adapt after the war ended with Britain in 1783.

What resulted from the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation quizlet?

Effect: -The Confederation could not raise funds to pay its debts or implement national laws. No power to regulate foreign or interstate trade. Effect: -States became divided from each other as they competed for trade advantages. -Very little economic coordination among the states.
