Hat die Mannschaft von Trainer Julian Nagelsmann angesichts dieser WM-Power überhaupt den Hauch einer Chance? In seiner aktuellen Kolumne für den Pay-TV-Sender Sky hat Rekordnationalspieler Lothar Matthäus auf diese Frage eine klare Antwort gegeben.

Rhetorisch fragt der Weltmeister von 1990: "Muss dem FC Bayern vor dem Achtelfinale der Champions League gegen Paris St.-Germain Angst und Bange sein, wenn man die Klasse von Mbappé und Messi in diesem Finale gesehen hat?" Er antwortet selber mit "Nein". So seien bis zum Königsklassen-Duell erstens "noch einige Monate" zu spielen – und zweitens würden die Superstars in einem Team "ganz anderes" auftreten als in einem WM-Finale für ihr Land. Zudem habe Matthäus "Messi im PSG-Trikot noch nicht so auftreten sehen wie für Argentinien bei dieser WM."

Ein Blick auf die Statistik stützt die These des heutigen TV-Experten: In der bisherigen Saison kam der 35-Jährige für PSG 19-mal zum Einsatz, dabei gelangen ihm elf Treffer und 14 Torvorlagen – alleine in den sieben WM-Spielen steuerte Messi sieben Tore und drei Vorlagen bei und lieferte zahlreiche Gala-Auftritte ab. In der Champions League verpasste der Routinier dagegen mit PSG den Gruppensieg und schloss die Vorrunde als Zweiter hinter Benfica Lissabon ab (zweimal 1:1). Nur so kam der Achtelfinal-Gipfel mit den Bayern, die ihre Gruppe vor Inter Mailand und dem FC Barcelona souverän gewannen, überhaupt zustande.

Und auch wenn die Bayern in der Offensive nicht über die Star-Dichte der Pariser verfügen, muss man den FCB laut Matthäus auf dem Zettel haben: "Die Bayern werden ihre Chancen bekommen, auch wenn es schwer wird", ist sich der einstige Bayern-Kapitän sicher.

Initial reactions and observations

• What an unlucky game for Bayern Munich. They created all the chances and hit the woodwork TWICE, only to be undone by a couple of PSG corners. Neither side scored from open play, but Bayern got the closest and couldn’t convert when it counted.
• Jens Scheuer’s substitutions were questionable. Subbing off Magull who was the creative heart of the team kept Bayern at a standstill for the next 20 minutes, and made finding a goal far more difficult than it needed to be. Bayern now have a mountain to climb in the second leg.
• Klara Buhl’s free kick was a bullet. That is all.

Full time: Bayern Munich 1-2 PSG.

The Allianz Arena will play host to the first leg of a massive Quarterfinal clash in the UEFA Women’s Champions League today when Bayern Munich host Paris Saint-Germain. It is a huge encounter for the Bavarians, and the match will be streamed, for free, worldwide on YouTube!

The first leg of this fixture is important for Bayern, as they will be looking to take a multiple goal lead to Paris ahead of the second leg. The French champions are no slouch, however, and Bayern will have their work cut out for them if they want to advance to the next round.

Jens Scheuer’s side received a huge boost this weekend when Sydney Lohmann returned to the field for the first time in months after a longer injury layoff. She looked good in her time on the field, helping Bayern down Eintracht Frankfurt.
