Question 1
Marketing is a process carried out within organizations in order to understand customer needs and fulfil them profitably.
This includes development of products, determining how they are packaged and presented, carrying out market research and understanding the needs of the consumer are all part of the marketing process.
Understanding the needs of your customers and how you can develop marketing campaigns in order to maximize the potential of your products is critical to the on-going success of any business.
Question 2
Frequent flier programs such as American Advantage (American Airlines) and One Pass (Copa Airlines) are examples of companies using relationship marketing in order to create customer loyalty and help maintain long term relationships with customers. I am personally a member of both these programs, whenever booking a flight I will try to ensure that I use one of these airlines in order to gain additional points that allow me to request free upgrades or even free flights when I have achieved certain levels within the program.
Question 3
As business objectives and technologies have evolved so has the marketing concept. Most business schools speak of five stages of evolution within the marketing concept, these being:
• Simple Trade era
• Product orientation era
• Sales orientation era
• Market orientation era
• Marketing Company era
Some teachers argues that there are two additional era’s that are important to note:
• Relationship Marketing era
• Social/Mobile Marketing era
I believe that this assessment is correct as based upon my personal experience I have responded to both Relationship and Social/Mobile Marketing era techniques.

Question 4
We carried out a three step evaluation of our new company ABC Coffee Shop, based in Kingston, Jamaica.
Step 1 – Review of Current Activities
Currently the ABC Coffee shop carries out a number of marketing activities in order to promote the store, maintain a positive image with customers and better understand their needs.
These include:
• Customer Feedback which are given to all customers to complete when they receive their check. Responses read and notes taken to change based on frequent comments.

• Sponsored bus stops close to our store locations, that are designed to attract passing customers, mainly tourists.

• Loyalty program offering free tea or coffee after a number of purchases.

• Monthly newsletter advising customers of menu updates and special promotions during the coming month. This is delivered via email to customers who registered for our loyalty program.

• Social media, facebook, twitter and Instagram accounts updated on a weekly basis with news about upcoming events, promotions and menu changes.

Overall these activities are designed to attract middle class customers who are working in a professional occupation such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants and other business people as well as tourists and visitors to the area.
Step 2 – What do we like doing? What is successful?
We conducted a review of each of the items in order to determine if they are offering value for money:
• Customer Feedback – These are a time consuming exercise as it requires a person to work through all of the forms. Looking back over the three months’ responses we found that the forms had not generated any significant feedback that had resulted to major changes or improvements to the business.

• Sponsored Bus Stops – There is an ongoing monthly maintenance cost in order to ensure that the bus stops are kept clean and well maintained and presenting the correct image of the businesses. We do not have reliable feedback on the success of these bus stops generating additional business for the store.

• Loyalty program – Analysis of this program shows that customers who participate in the program visit the store to purchase tea and coffee at an average of three times a week. We believe this is far more frequent than customers who do not participate in the program. In addition, customers who are part of the program are more likely to make additional purchase or place orders for business meetings or social events.

• Social Media – Our social media sites receive over 1,000 hits every month. It is time consuming to read comments and feedback on each of the sites but we realized that we had implemented three changes to the business based upon this feedback over the previous three months.

Streamlining Marketing Activities
Based upon the review of the above activities we have decided to carry out the following changes:
• Stop using customer feedback forms – they are not generating any significant value.

• Sponsored bus stops will be removed – we do not have a method to determine their success and therefore justify the monthly maintenance fees.

• Loyalty Programs - put greater focus an

UNIT 4 Learning Outcome one: Understand the concept and process of marketing
Marketing is a management process which involves the selling of goods or services.
Marketing has changed overtime due to the fact that organizations want new customers every day. The services a company offer may upgrade or discounts might be given. In the examples of relationship marketing, (Marketing-schools.org, n.d.) explains Direct Recruitment, “The direct mail marketing firm sends out handwritten birthday cards to clients and associates every year”. This means that the company is trying to let the customers feel appreciated. They’ll try to make improvements on their products, whatever way they can. So they might either send emails thanking them for their purchases or they might just call to welcome new customers.
The evolution of marketing has processed through 5 concepts: Sales, Production, Product, Societal and Marketing concept. When using the sales concept, companies try to increase their advertisement rate. When customers see/hear about a product seldom, they tend to buy or want that product constantly. The production concept is created to enable customers to purchase items that are able to be gotten and what they can afford. When a company focus on the needs and interest of the customers and not on their products they are using the societal concept. The product concepts is about bringing the best product or giving the best services to the market. While the marketing concepts thinks about how they can satisfy their customers before they produce a product.

2. The concept of marketing of changed and evolved overtime. One such change is in relationship marketing. Use an example to explain what this means.
“Some examples of relationship marketing are sending birthday cards to clients…” (Reference.com, 2016). This will allow clients to feel that you care about them. Because sending them a birthday card shows that you remember this particular consumer and so they will have that interest in always wanting to come back. However this will also prevent the business from failing because these clients will go out and tell their friends and families about this. So they will always have new persons coming to this particular business place.

3. Using your knowledge of marketing concept thoroughly explain the evolution of marketing concept.
“The marketing concept is the philosophy that firms should analyse the needs of their customers and then make decisions to satisfy those needs, better than the competition”(Netmba.com, 2016). “Marketing philosophy has undergone a thorough and gradual change since the great Industrial Revolution that took place during the latter-half of the 18th and first-half of the 19th centuries” (YourArticleLibrary.com: The Next Generation Library, 2015). Evolution basically means the development of something. The managers of the marketing companies use this change since the great Industrial Revolution has a guide to improve on their marketing activities. They will use concepts such as the selling concepts, the marketing concepts and the production concepts to help in the development of their activities. The development of their activities will help them to improve and to be better than the competition.

1. Marketing is the operation of arranging as well as executing plans, pricing and the distribution of goods and services to please organizations as well as individual wants and needs.

2. As is relates to relationship marketing, an example is the frequent flyer program offered by American airline to sustain customer loyalty which offer discounts, free flights and upgrades (Marketing-schools.org, n.d.)

3. The history of marketing started with the Trade Era. Scarce handmade goods were distributed by exploring unfamiliar areas. In the Production Orientation Era which enters the industrial age, manufacturing was the main focus as goods were scarce, hence a foundation was created on the remark ‘’supply creates its own demand’’. After the Industrial Revolution, the Sales orientation era saw the production exceeding demand and advertisement, sales and branding became relevant as there was more competition for customers. Regarding the marketing orientation era, marketing strategies changed in the second half of the 21st century and beyond, due to the oversupply of goods. New steps were taken to find out what the consumer wants and to find creative ways to supply such goods, via market research, branding and pricing. In the Relationship marketing era, companies then focused on developing the relationship with customers so that they could build customer loyalty. The Social/Marketing Era focuses on real-time connection, e.g. via social media or customer care services also social interaction (Moré, 2012)

3. Marketing concept is the philosophy that organization should anticipate the needs of there customers and satisfy them better than there competitors. There are five (5) different conceptstyles of marketing since the beginning of time:

The Product concept
The Production concept
The selling concept
The Marketing concept
The Societal marketing concept

The product concept is the notion that customers will prefer products of better quality and performance as as to the opposite. In this concept customers are not worried about the cost of the product or service as long as they are getting value for there money. In the production Era organization focus primarilyon production, manufacturing and efficiency. This concept states that customers will always choose products and service that are widely available and are of a lower cost. Customers will not buy enough of a product or service if they are not influence to do. That is what the selling concept propose. Customers need to feel the need for the product and service for them to transformed that feeling into actual buying. The success of any organization is through successful marketing. This is done by companies identifing there target market, what are there needs and wants and how they can diliver. In the marketing concept they relie on market research to identify needs of the customers and potential customers. The Societal marketing concept is qwhere an organization believes in giving back to the society by providing better products that is more beneficial to the welfare of the society. Many organizations wondered if this philosophy is appropriate for this Era of environmental deterioration and resources shortage. Many look past this concept because of the conflict with customers wants and interests and therefore have been criticized for satisfying customers wants at the expense of the society.

1.What is marketing?
The Chartered Institute of Marketing defines marketing as: “The management process which identifies, anticipates and supplies customer requirements efficiently and profitably (Media3.bournemouth.ac.uk,n.d.).
In this era my opinion of marketing is promoting goods and services that appeals to consumer needs and wants through advertising with different medium such as radio and television to make a profit.
2 The concept of marketing have changed &evolved overtime one such change is in relationship marketing use an example to explain what it means.
Relationship marketing is oriented toward long term to deliver long term value to customers (Kotler et al, 2008) . An example is a shoemaker will provide quality shoes to satisfy his customer needs and in return they will continue buying from him so in that case a relationship will formed between the shoemaker and his customers. This relationship will be formed because of the quality of his products and the assurity that they will get value for their money.
3. Using your knowledge of marketing concept thoroughly explain the evolution of marketing concept.
The marketing concept focuses on customer needs, coordinates all marketing activities affecting customer and makes profit by creating long term customer relationships based on customer value and satisfaction (kotler et al; 2008). It has later evolved by satisfying customers needs and wants . It also evolved by producing goods& services of the best quality. By doing doing a lot of promotions and undertaking large scale selling. Marketing concept also evolved by taking interest in target markets by providing the desired goods.
Marketing concept has evolved where firms are now analyzing the needs of their customers more effectively and they are also making better decision to satisfy these needs more effectively than the competition.

1. Marketing is the way in which a company or individual advertise a product so that it can be sold.
2. Marketing-schools.org state that conducting polls and surveys to solicit feedback from customers help gain a strong term relationship due to relationship marketing method.
3.Marketing concepts are evolving and (morethanbranding.com/2012/04/30) helped to led me to understand that each concept change overtime and improve due to technology and customers. www.UKessays.com had an article published 23 of march 2015, stating that the evolution of marketing concepts has mainly three periods which help in the making of there product and making it easier for customers to choose their product.

1. Marketing is the concept of which goods and services are being used by customers on a day to day basis In order to satisfy their needs and wants.

2. Marketing concept is a philosophy that businesses use to satisfy the need and want for consumers better than other competitors do for example production concept `` this concept is the eldest of the concept in the business,it holds that consumers will perfer production that are widely available and inexpensive "(Kotler, 2000).

3. Evolution of marketing.... as the UK essays.com defines ``change is the only thing that will never change in this world. Same thing goes to the marketing world where the change and the evolution of marketing concept have revolutionized and the way organizations and customers interact with each other. What created the change were the development of technology and the increase usage of Internet which allows the organization's to use it as an ultimate leverage tool. As how humans evolved from staying in a cave to building high rise building to live, marketing concepts evolved in a same manner that improves the lives of organizations and also the consumers"(UK essays.com, Nov 2013)

Marketing:
1) Marketing can be explained as a process in which goods and services are put on show to customers to gain appeal, thus leading to a higher profit.
2) Relationship Marketing: One such example of 'Relationship Marketing' is one that a certain bank provides. Some agents are able to come to you and collect documents for the process to go quickly, if you are unable to make it in to the institution itself to submit. They also provide personal assistant in attaining some documentation for example if you are purchasing a car through the bank, the agent is able to help. They also keep regular checks on you even after the transaction is over.
3) The evolution of marketing: Under this comes four (4) philosophies. The first is the production concept. This concept primarily focuses on improving production and distribution efficiently so that they are more available and highly affordable. The next concept is the product concept. This has to deal with perpetual product development so that the consumers will develop a liking to the product. Then comes the selling concept, which entails, the idea that more will be sold to the consumer if the organisation assumes a bigger scale of selling and promoting effort s. It is an inside-out perspective. The last one is the marketing concept, which on the other hand is a outside-in perspective. This is basically attending to the need and wants of the target markets better than their competitors.

1. Marketing is the exchange of goods or services in order to meet the consumer needs.

2. Relationship Marketing evolved into today's society with many companies. Companies look towards long term goal and value customers, they also deliver long term goal and long term value to costumer based on long term satisfaction (Quarrie, 2016). Relationship marketing however is having a long-term relationship with customers. Customer Loyalty begins with relationship market. Example: As American airline grows over a period of time this airline will looks for different ways to enable the exchange process thus "The airline maintains a comprehensive frequent flyer program that rewards customer loyalty with the promise of free flights, upgrades, and discounts (Marketing-schools.org, 2016)"

3. According to (Quarrie, 2016) Evolution of Marketing Concept has gone through some changes "since the great Industrial Revolution that took place during the latter-half of the 18th and first-half of the 19th centuries" There are five philosophies that companies should use when marketing their activities are:
"The Production Concept, The Product Concept, The Selling Concept, The Marketing Concept and The Societal Marketing Concept". From my perspective Evolution marketing Concept helps marketing managers to realize the behavior, changes and desire of a customer over time. Marketing managers must operate their business with the changing needs of the Evolution Market. Example: A customer is a frequent shopper of a local mini-mart in their community, each time this customer went to purchase a hair brush there is none the manager now take into consideration that they need to facilitate the customer needs.

1. Marketing is a management process through which services move from concept to the customer, by promoting service, with the aim of increasing the value of the company,or yo raise the profile of the company and its products in the public mind.

2. Relationship marketing is sending birthday cards to clients on their birthday in order to maintain and strengthen the relationship with existing Clients as it does to the necessary search for new customers.

3. The evolution of marketing concept deals with the functions of distribution of goods and commodities. The flow of goods from producer to the consumer is product-oriented, aiming to maximize the profits through maximizing the sales

question1
in your own words explain what is marketing?
from my own understanding marketing is everything a person or company does to win new customers and encourage or motivate them to use their product or services on a regular basic.

question2
the concept of marketing has changed and evolved overtime. one such change is in relationship marketing. use an example to explain what this means.
an example of this is right here in Jamaica is the 'MAGNA REWARDS'. it where customers are given a magna card which is accepted by many locations. whenever you use your magna cards while shopping or paying your bills at any paymaster location, you accumulate point. which then comes back to you in the form of a cheque with cash value based on your purchases or the amount of bills you pay over period of time ( usually 6 months). you can use the cheque to purchases goods or pay your bills. this goes beyond getting new customers or individual sales; but creates customers retention and an emotional connections to the brand. magna as persons reap long term benefits as well as feel the company is rewarding them for their business. there is thus a relationship between customers and company.

question3
using your knowledge of marketing concept, thoroughly explain the evolution of marketing concept.
the marketing concept is the philosophy that firms should analyze the needs of their customers and then make decisions to satisfy those needs, better than the competition.

Marketing is the process through which goods and services are produced and are moved from producer to consumer/s. Marketing concepts have evolved through the maximum use of automated technology that are often used to distribute as well as manufacture products, the internet assists in marketing products online, etc. According to website http://www.marketing-schools.org/types-of-marketing/relation-marketing.html an example includes Dell computers which created a special online store for high volume corporate customers. This provides a higher level of service which leads to an increase in their customer loyalty. The evolution of the marketing concept believes that the needs and wants of target markets are achieved due to the organizational goals set by a company.

1. Marketing is the managing of a profitable customer relationship by creating excellent value for customers and building strong relationship in order to capture value from customers in return. The two main goals of marketing are to attract new customers by promising superior value and to keep and grow current customers by delivering satisfaction. E.g. “Digicel the bigger better network”

2. Marketing use to be about making profit but overtime this has changed. The factors and sources outside marketing that affects marketing management have motivated them to build and maintain a successful marketing relationship which target customers. E.g. You-tube; you-tube is used as a means of promotion, to connect inform and inspire. It gives the costumer a clear view has to what the company product is about. In return, the company gets to see the costumers’ reviews and how they can improve the quality of their product.

3. From my understanding; evolution marketing concept means that the company’s work to understand consumers as well as to create costumer values and build strong customer relationship.
The five marketing philosophies help to determine the management of marketing companies approach and conduct in business in order to achieve their organizational goals. The five concepts by which companies are guided in their marketing efforts are the production concept, product concept, selling concept, marketing concept and societal concepts. Each of these concepts plays a major role in the marketing industry.

1 Marketing -to my understanding marketing is the management process for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably(UK based Chartered Institute of Marketing ). as it is the activity, where businesses create product ad or services, communicate with society at large and deliver value for the consumers money. Marketing helps you to understand your product market to know exactly what your target market (consumers) desire of that particular product that you can efficiency supply it profitably.

2 The concept of marketing of changed and evolved overtime. One such change is in relationship marketing. Use an example to explain what this means.
Relationship marketing is about creating long-term relationships with customers. Rather than trying to convince a one-time sale or offer, but building a relationship with their market and ensuring that they provide exemplary products and or services. This fosters growth for the business as it play an informative role . It involves a company refining the way they do business in order to maximize profit sustainable, by acknowledging the value of that relationship of that of customer. With the constant change of technology it affects marketing strategies which gives current and prospective costumers details of the product or services at finger tips by accessing these information on there phone, tablet and laptop. With relationship marketing it allows the business to keep up appearances on social media where business are most advertised eg. face book, instagram and twitter are just some of the intangible mediums In contrast, a decade ago business were highly dependent on tangible advertising example newspapers and flyers this was a one way communication but now things and times change where technology is constantly evolving forcing businesses and consumers to adapt to this change. The current era creates and maintain a relationship between consumers and the company as consumers can give there imput about a product and company can inform about availability, pricing and bonuses/give-a-ways.
3 Using your knowledge of marketing concept thoroughly explain the evolution of marketing concept
With the constant change of the concept of marketing that allow business to get into the customers hands faster than before, this forces business to be creative and innovative by updating and coming up with better ideas of how to reach their target market and maintain the marketing relationship by keeping up their appearances. This modern era of social media allows your packaging to look much more consumer and environmental friendly , people now a day purchase product or services depending on the impact it has on the environment. Additionally the current marketing concept aid a business to realize realistic business objectives by acknowledging their target market needs and overcoming their competitors efficiently in the market place.

NOTES FROM TEACHER

Marketing is the process, by which we use various mediums of advertising, planning and distribution of good and services to satisfy customer’s wants and need and to make a profit.
According to Baron Conway and Warnaby (2010) Relationship Marketing is defined as retaining customers using defensive strategies. With this being said examples of Relationship Marketing take for example Kentucky Fried Chicken. They know that they offer quality fried chicken for your money as a result customers are loyal and happy and they have high customer retention as they are consistent with the quality given for the money received.

The evolution of Marketing Concepts has three stages the first stage is the Marketing concept which focuses on customer wants. The second stage is the humanistic marketing concept this has to do with focusing on customer want and what they are there interested .and the third is the societal concept which means that focus is placed on customer’s wants and interest with little concern about the society. The Product Concept. "This introduction holds that buyers will support those items that offer the most quality, execution, or imaginative elements. Directors concentrating on this idea focus on making better items and enhancing them after some time".

1. Marketing is the ethical way of promoting goods and services to satisfy customers' needs and wants.

2. Relationship marketing is a facet of customer relationship management (CRM) that focuses on customer loyalty and long-term customer engagement rather than shorter-term goals like customer acquisition and individual sales.
SearchCRM 'What is relationship marketing?' Whatis.com(2016)
http://searchcrm.techtarget.com/definition/relationship-marketing

Example: Sending birthday cards to clients offering reward plans to customers and creating web pages and forums to answer their questions to become better informed so that you can make changes based on customers' request. And this will help create a bond between the buyers and sellers which will cause less conflict in the relationship.

3. The evolution of marketing concept evolved from the earlier orientation namely: the production concept, the product concept, the selling concept, the marketing concept and the societal concept. The marketing concept is to bring attention to marketing managers on serving broad class of customers' needs rather than on the firms current product (production concept) or devising methods to attract customers to current product (selling concept). The societal marketing concept has emerged to enlightened marketing that company should make good marketing decisions by considering consumers' wants, the company requirements, consumer long-run interest and society's long-run interest.
