What is Dermatology?
Dermatology is a medical specialty that focuses on hair, skin, and nails and the diseases that affect each. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects.
What is a Dermatologist?
A dermatologist is a medical doctor who has completed specialty training in the field of dermatology and who diagnoses and treats diseases of the hair, skin, and nails. Dermatologists can also assist with cosmetic issues. In addition to regular office visits, most dermatologists also perform procedures such as surgical excisions and biopsies. Some dermatologists, like Dr. Mikell, go on to complete a surgical fellowship in order to be able to perform special skin cancer surgeries called Mohs surgeries. In order to provide patients with better care, some dermatologists also hire and train physician assistants and nurse practitioners to diagnose and treat patients under their supervision.
How Common are Skin Diseases?
The skin is the most visible and largest organ of the body. The skin comes in contact with and acts as a barrier against the outside world and can reflect your overall health. Almost everyone has some type of skin disease at one point in their life. For example, one in five persons will develop a skin cancer in their lifetime and one in five people will develop a "cold sore" (herpes simplex).
